Goole Shipbuilders

John Gutteridge

Born about 1806, and in 1841 he was living in Providence Place, Spring Gardens, Goole and he had sons Samuel and Edward and described as a shipbuilder.

Cottingham Brothers

James and his brother John were originally from Burton upon Stather. John married Mary Bullement, a dairymaid, from Whitton and had a daughter called Annie and living at 1 Vermuyden Terrace, Goole. In 1861 he was an apprentice ship's carpenter. By 1881 he was employing 26 men and 8 boys in the shipyard. They built several large ketches in the 1890's and 'Young Fox' built 1893. (Picture of the shipyard in Goole Museum). In 1891 he had remarried to Annie/Ann from Hull and went on to have children Fred and James and by 1901 both sons were in the ship building trade.

John Baines

Born Selby about 1783 he was in 1851 described as a Master boat builder and widower living behind the Ferryboat Inn. By 1861 and 1871 he had moved to South Street and remarried to Mary from Selby but now described as shipwright.

Mark Pearson

In 1851 was living at 2 Prospect Place, Goole with his wife Sarah and children William, Thomas and nieces Sarah Ann and Mary Sailes, his ocuupation was shipbuilder. In 1861 they had a daughter Emily and still described as a shipbuilder. By 1871 he was living in James Street, Goole and now a Master shipbuilder employing 18 men and 11 boys.

On March 27th 1856 he launched the Brig 'Charity' for Messrs Jewitt and Thomlinson, she was described as finest brig ever buily at Goole and a large crowd of people were present at the launch.

'Result' Schooner built in 1867 for Green & Co., London for the Newcastle to Portugal trade. 119 tons 84 x 21 x 11, Captain W. Mawer (1870)

'Henrietta' Schooner built in 1868 for Thompson & Co., Goole for the Goole coastal trade. 73 tons 72 x 20 x 10, Captain Rowbottom (1870)

'Prosperity' Schooner built in 1869 for Wetherill, London for the Newcastle to france trade. 94 tons 79 x 20 x 10, Captain Wetherill (1870)

'Wide Awake' Ketch built in 1871 for Pearson & Co., Goole for the Goole coastal trade. 56 tons 75 x 18 x 8, Captain W. Tann (1870)

George William Outwin

Born in 1841 at Thorne he moved to Whitgift in 1851 and married Sarah Ann Stothard in 1864 at Sculcoates, Hull. In the 1871 Census he was aged 31 and a carpenter and shipbuilder, and had 3 sons. By 1881 he was listed as shipbuilder and they now had a daughter. His father - in - law was a sawyer. He remained in the area until about1891 when he moved to Lincolnshire then to Chester by 1901. In 1882 he built 'Charlotte Kilner' a wooden vessel of 79 tons 75ft x 19ft for the Kilner family.

James and William Wake.

James was born about 1795 in Whitby and married to Mary from Newcastle. William was his youngest son born about 1835 in Boothferry Road, Goole. By 1861 William was still working with his father James then in 1871 William was running the business and was employing 20 men and 15 boys.

'Athletae' schooner 108 tons 85 x 21 x 10 built in 1867 for W. Cass, Goole for the Goole Mediteranean trade. Captain S. Tupman (1870) official No. 54517.

"George Duckles' Schooner built in 1869 for Cass & Co., Goole for the Hull to Azores trade. 162 tons 100 x 23 x 12, Captain Tupman (1870)

'Princess' official No. 67828 and 94 tons in 1879.
