Howden Dyke Shipbuilders

John Banks

John Banks, shipbuilder from Howdendyke purchased Howden Hall in 1849.

He was at least the owner if not builder of the 'Fullerton', brigantine 1854 and 172 tons, Captain G. Clark for the Goole/Australia run.

1854 'Saltmarshe' Schooner (Official No.4953) 70 tons for John Banks, Howden and Henry Bull, Hull. 1855 Captain H.Bull, for the Newcastle/Antwerp run.

1857 'Brackenholme' Brigantine (Official No.18252) 115 tons for John Banks, Howdon, John Holdridge Goole.

'Babthorp' brigantine 192 tons, 95 x 23 x 12, Captain Oldridge (1870), built 1861 for J. Banks for the Goole Baltic run.

'Swallow' schooner 116 tons. 83 x 20 x 10, Captain G. Calvert (1870), built 1864 for J. Banks for Goole trade.

'Cass' schooner 104 tons, 82 x 20 x 10, Captain W. Moat (1870), built 1866 for W. Cass, Goole for the Goole trade.

'Brackenholme' brigantine 108 tons 88 x 20 x 10, Captain J.Holdridge, (Captain G. Moat 1870) built 1869 for the Goole - Lisbon trade.

William Caisley

Born about 1836 in Northumberland he went on to marry Mary Hope of Selby, daughter of Thomas Hope keelman and master of 'Wressle Castle'. In 1881 he was described as a shipbuilder employing 3 men and 4 apprentices. By 1891 his sons John and Hope was helping with the shipbuilding and in 1901 sons John, Hope and Thomas assisted him, he was 65 by then.

In 1892 Baines Directory he is mentioned under Kilpin and under Skelton as shipbuilder.

'Elite' Schooner official No. 67839 118 tons built at a cost of £3,000 for the Newfoundland trade in 1883.

'George Kilner' top sail Schooner official No. 91324 124 tons built 1891.

'Golden Wedding' brigantine 216 tons built 1893 for George Kilner and wrecked off Mexico in 1907 (Painting by Reuben Chappell in Goole Museum).
