James Shepard. - (The Universal British Directory Trade, Commerce and Manufacture.)
John Foster. - 1809 " The Jubliee of George III, which was celebrated throughout the country with great rejoicings on the 25th October 1808, was ushered in by the ringing of bells and firing of cannon. A fine ship was launched from Mr. John Foster, called the 'Jubilee', in honour of the day."
1818, 'Selby' 80 tons 24 h.p. built by Foster, Selby engines by Overton & Smith, for the Hull to Barton run.
Gutteridge Samuel, Ousegate.
'Baines 1822. Samuel Gutteridge was born about 1785 in Selby and went on to marry Mary Foster 1st December 1805. In 1841 he was described as a shipbuilder and by 1851 he was employing 21 men and his grandson Samuel was an apprentice shipwright.'
'On Tuesday last was launched from the ship-yard of Mr. S. Gutteridge, of Selby, a fine brigantine, called the 'Paulinus', 128 tons register, intend for York and London old contract, from Stanton's wharf.' - 1830.
'A fine brig 'John' was launched from the ship-yard of Mr.Gutteridge, of Selby on the 14th Inst. burthen 140 tons, intended for the Baltic and Goole trade.' - 1832.
'On Tuesday week, was launched from Mr. Gutteridge's ship-yard, the finely modelled iron steam vessel 'Railway' , Mr John Camsell, master, the property of James Audas Esq. She is intended to ply between Selby and Hull, with passengers; being so constructed as to draw the least draught of water, it is fully expected she will be enabled to make the passage between Selby and Hull without grounding in any time of the tides.' - 1835.
'On Wednesday, the 16th inst. there was launched from the stocks in Mr Gutteridge's ship-yard, Selby, a large and beautiful brig, named the 'Thetis', of upwards of 300 tons burthen by admeasurement. The 'Thetis' is the property of Messrs Standering and Co. the large ship-owners of Selby, and is destined for the Baltic. The launch was a particularly fine one, and came off without any accident or casualty whatever; and owing to the extreme beauty of the morning, it was witnessed by a greater number than usual of the inhabitants of Selby - many hundreds lining both banks of the river, and completely crowding the noble bridge that spans it.'
- 1837 official No.33225.
'A melancholy. occurance took place on Thursday last, in the Selby and Haddley canal. Mr Samuel Gutteridge, the old established and well known ship builder, of Selby, committed suicide by drowning himself in that part of the above canal called Brayton Bridge. He passed a lad hauling a vessel, walking with his hands behind him, and on the same lad arriving some distance further up the canal, the body of the deceased gentleman was discovered floating on the surface of the water, but life was extent. He had taken off his coat and hat, and placed them behind a hedge. A verdict of 'temporay insanity' has been returned. Mr Gutteridge was about seventy years of age and carried on an extensive business. At the inquest no circumstances tending to produce that depression of spirits under which he terminated his life, appeared to be commonly known.' - June 1854.
